Mechanism of Acylation
Aluminium chloride is a Lewis acid able to take chlorine along with its electron pair from an acyl chloride:

The resulting carbocation attacks the benzene ring to give

The aromatic ring is restored, to give the product

But unfortunately the ketone forms a complex with the AlCl3

3 moles of water are needed to liberate the ketone from the complex, incidentally destroying the AlCl3.

This means that the Lewis acid has to be present in stoichiometric quantities.
